Space Invader

Space Invader is originally a Japanese arcade game released in 1974, where the player is an armed space ship shooting at small pixilated alien like creatures that slowly advance towards your ship. In recent years an urban French artist started using this name to create his works of street art under. He became famous for placing the characters from the space invader video game in different areas of Paris. The works are unique street art installations because rather than using spray paint the traditional medium of graffiti, his works are made up of small colored tiles that are then molded onto city walls. This also gives his work a very specific aesthetic that calls back to the pixilated video games of the early technology. He does other video game characters in this style as well ranging from the Nintendo character mario and Pac-man.

Space Invader is now a full time practicing artist with tile mosaic works for sale. Some of his newer indoor art projects use similar themes and techniques to his graffiti works but utilize a new medium, he calls it “Rubikcubism.” by arranging multiple Rubik’s cubes in a certain pattern he creates images on a large scale using only the colors on the Rubik’s cube to create famous images from art history and pop culture films such as Origins of the World and  A Clockwork Orange. Below is an example photo of the process the artist goes through to create these images using Rubik’s Cube.
